In 2023, the average funding per capita for urban and rural resident basic medical insurance in China increased to more than 1,097 yuan. In the past few years, the Chinese public health insurance system gradually reformed itself, as the rural cooperative medical scheme and the urban resident basic medical insurance were both integrated into a uniform urban and rural resident basic medical insurance system.

One yuan equals to 0.14 U.S. dollars and 0.13 euros (as of August 2024). Data before 2019, including the information concerning the discontinued urban resident basic medical insurance and the rural cooperative medical scheme come from the chapter 13.1.2 of China's Health Statistics Yearbook 2022 (page 335), 2014 and 2015 data of urban resident basic medical insurance does not include the personal accounts deposits of urban employee basic medical insurance participants.
